There is no denying that David Leidholdt has been among the most dedicated and hard-working artistic directors to ever set foot in Millbrook Playhouse.
So it is with sadness that David is leaving after nine years, more than 100 productions, close to 1,000 interviews and the hiring of some 400 actors and actresses.
No small accomplishments, and all to the betterment of one of our most cherished cultural venues.
Indeed, David — like most of his predecessors — has contributed greatly to Millbrook, an off-Broadway, professional summer stock theatre that brings great entertainment and culture to our little part of the world.
In a recent interview, David told The Express that he feels he’s taken the company as far as he can, and it’s time to pass the torch to someone new who can introduce fresh ideas and perspectives.
Of particular note, he said it’s been wonderful watching local children grow up and seeing how the ensemble has enriched their lives.
If our math is correct, Millbrook will usher in a new artistic director in 2023, its 60th year.
This beautiful “old barn” has two stages: A 235-seat Main Stage and a 100-seat Cabaret Theatre.
David has directed the shows over a dynamic era in Millbrook’s life: Strong success in fundraising with gifts but also sadness with the onset of COVID and cancellation of a season.
But this vaunted venue is stronger than ever, thanks in part of David and his leadership.
The first year he opened a show every week; beginning in 2015, he expanded the season, adding the fall show and creating the Youth Ensemble.
And at a time when theatres around the county were folding, he’s worked to keep Millbrook functioning mostly in the black, sustaining what is truly a remarkable asset in our rural community — a professional theatre.
Crowds are robust this season as the Playhouse works its way back to normal.
Thanks, David, for your years of dedication and hard work!
