STEUBENVILLE — The Jefferson County Educational Service Center is assisting in the search for a new superintendent of the Buckeye Local School District.
Applications are being accepted until Friday, and the tentative timetable is to conduct interviews between Oct. 19 and Nov. 2 with the new official possibly named around Nov. 21.
Buckeye Local Board of Education Vice President Ashley West said a search committee comprised of board members and educators is seeking the new leader. Superintendent Scott Celestin accepted the post after serving on an interim basis and will remain in place until a successor is named. He has joined West and board President Teresa George on the committee along with JCESC Superintendent Chuck Kokiko, district Treasurer Merri Matthews, representatives of the Buckeye Local Certified Teachers Association and Ohio Association of Public School Employees, building principals and community leaders.
Celestin had been named interim superintendent after Kim Leonard resigned from the position in December. She had held the post since May 2017.
West said the ideal superintendent would embody the best of Buckeye Local and help carry the district, which includes Buckeye Local Junior High School and Buckeye North, West and South Elementary Schools, into a successful future.
“We are looking for someone who is honest, respectful, driven and goal-oriented, a strong, accountable leader who values the students, faculty and community within our district,” she said. “It is someone who strives for the success of our students. It would be very valuable to our district if this person also displayed strengths in grant writing.”
The committee has met three times since July to move forward and recently posted the position seeking candidates, while JCESC has overseen advertising. Candidates may apply at JCESC, which has advertised on websites such as Zip Recruiter and indeed, and Buckeye Local has also shared details on its social media page.
Information is available by contacting the district at (740) 769-7395 or at
West was grateful to JCESC and others for their assistance and said the school district was ready to move forward.
“We are looking for someone who is ready to utilize our strengths and overcome our weaknesses. We will be making a big decision that impacts a lot of people so we are not taking this lightly. With the guidance of Kokiko and the ESC, we strongly feel that we will be able to make the best decision possible. Thank you to Kokiko and thank you to everyone in our district. We are so grateful to have such supportive staff, faculty and community.”
Kokiko said the JCESC was pleased to be involved and he is optimistic about what’s to come.
“The Buckeye Local School District is currently searching for a new superintendent and the JCESC is pleased to be assisting the board in the process. Activities began several months ago with open meetings centering on gathering key qualities for the individual,” he added. “The board has sought input from the public and current employees with the focus on being transparent throughout. One can feel the excitement within the district as they look to find and name the individual who will lead Buckeye Local in the future.”
