Chris Sutton understands why Ange Postecoglou’s name is being raised with regards to English Premier League jobs, but thinks the Australian is just getting started at Celtic.
The mad merry-go-round in the English top-flight began after Thomas Tuchel was fired by Chelsea this morning, with Graham Potter of Brighton & Hove Albion widely linked with the vacant post.
In turn, that has led to online chatter with regards to Postecoglou’s suitability for a job down south from some prominent journalists, including Adam Crafton of The Athletic. But Sutton isn’t having it.
Speaking on Twitter, the former Celtic hero said: “Ange Postecoglou will be linked with managerial jobs in the Premier League, and I’m sure will eventually go down south. But he’s only just got started at Celtic, and he’s building something special. He certainly wouldn’t downgrade to a club Brighton’s size just yet… why would he?”
I’m with Sutton here. I don’t think Celtic fans need to worry too much about Postecoglou moving on yet. He’s a happy man in Glasgow and, more importantly, still has things he wants to achieve here.
His stock is indeed rising. Most observers were very impressed with the way Celtic took the game to Real Madrid last night, for example, despite losing 3-0.
Just like some of our top players, noise and chatter around them is inevitable when they are doing well. It doesn’t mean anything is imminent or that Celtic will be sidetracked by it.
I’m confident Ange and the team are laser-focused on Livingston this weekend, and Shakhtar Donetsk beyond that.
